Columbiadamm Cemetery is a repository of German imperial, colonial and genocidal history. It is Germany's first Muslim cemetery, the main historical military cemetery in Berlin and the site of the “Hererostein” (Herero Stone), a memorial that honors German perpetrators of colonial violence against the Herero and Nama people in what is now Namibia.

Through conversation with activists, historians, cultural workers, cemetery staff and visitors, Still Fields examines the cemetery’s unrecognized and contentious layers of history, which lie incongruously alongside one another.

Der Friedhof am Columbiadamm ist ein Spiegel der deutschen Reichs-, Kolonial- und Völkermordsgeschichte. Er ist der erste muslimische Friedhof Deutschlands, der historisch-zentrale Militärfriedhof Berlins und der Standort des “Hererosteins”, ein umstrittenes Denkmal für Täter deutscher Kolonialverbrechen gegen die Herero und Nama im heutigen Namibia.

In Gesprächen mit Aktivist:innen, Historiker:innen, Kulturschaffenden, Friedhofsmitarbeiter:innen und Besucher:innen untersucht Still Fields die widersprüchliche Geschichte und Gegenwart des Friedhofs.

About the artists:

Ali El-Darsa is a visual artist, filmmaker and educator. He is a 2022 fellow at Villa Aurora residency, Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles, and a board member of Dazibao, an art center dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary image practices in Montreal, Canada.

Elias Kosanke is a writer and educator working mainly in the performing arts. His recent work has been presented at Deutsches Theater, Theater Wuppertal and the Berlin Ringtheater.

Über die Künstler:

Ali El-Darsa arbeitet mit Film und visuellen Medien, sowie in der freien Bildungsarbeit. 2022 wird er Stipendiat der Villa Aurora (Thomas Mann House) in Los Angeles sein, sowie Vorstandsmitglied von Daziboa, Zentrum zur Vermittlung von zeitgenössischer Kunst in Montreal, Kanada.

Elias Kosanke arbeitet als freier Autor für Theater, Audio sowie Performance und gibt Schreibkurse. Seine Arbeiten wurden am Deutschen Theater, am Theater Wuppertal und am Ringtheater Berlin gezeigt.

Interviewees:

Işıkali Karayel is the founder-owner of Markaz, an Islamic funeral center in Neukölln, Berlin.

Israel Kaunatjike is a Herero activist fighting for the revision of Germany’s colonial history. He is a founding member of the coalition “No Amnesty on Genocide”.

Dr. Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung is an independent curator, author and biotechnologist. He is the founder and artistic director of SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin and the artistic director of Sonsbeek20–24 in Arnhem, the Netherlands. He is a professor in the Spatial Strategies MA program at the Weissensee Academy of Art in Berlin. As of 2023 he will take on the role of director at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin.

Gülşah Stapel is a critical heritage and memories expert. She is a curator at the Berlin Wall Foundation, where she focuses on outreach and historical/political education. She defines herself as “Bosporus-Hanseatin” and European.

Israel Kaunatjike ist Herero-Aktivist und kämpft für die Aufarbeitung der Kolonialgeschichte in Deutschland. Er ist Gründungsmiitglied beim Bündnis “Völkermord verjährt nicht”.

Dr. Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung arbeitet als unabhängiger Kurator, Autor und Biotechnologe. Er ist Gründer und künstlerischer Leiter von SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin und künstlerischer Leiter von Sonsbeek20-24 in Arnheim, Niederlande. Er ist Professor des MA Studiengangs Raumstrategien an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee. Ab 2023 wird er die Leitung des Hauses der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin übernehmen.

Gülşah Stapel ist eine Expertin für kritische Denkmal- und Erinnerungskulturen. Sie ist Kuratorin bei der Stiftung Berliner Mauer mit den Schwerpunkten Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und historisch-politische Bildungsarbeit. Sie bezeichnet sich selbst als “Bospurus-Hanseatin” und Europäerin.
